During a divorce there will be a qualified domestic relations order (QDRO) put in place. A QDRO is a court order that requires that a portion of a retirement plan be assigned or paid to another person, such as a spouse. Typically, a couples' assets are divided during a divorce, but since that split doesn’t automatically extend to retirement plans, a QDRO is used.
